Brickyard 400: Round 21 and the Brickyard name

The nickname comes from the original surface laid in 1909, when the track was paved with millions of bricks. A strip of them remains at the start-finish line, and winners have a habit of kissing it. NASCAR first visited in 1994, and the race has been part of the schedule ever since, apart from a spell on the road course in 2021. The 2027 event runs from Friday 23 July to Sunday 25 July. The date is confirmed.

NASCAR Speedway: a 2.5-mile rectangle with flat corners

The speedway is a rectangle with four short chutes and four nearly flat corners. Stock cars are heavy and slide through them, so overtaking is difficult and track position matters. Long green-flag runs are common, and a restart can decide the whole afternoon.

The scale of the place is hard to grasp until you arrive: the grandstands are vast and the infield contains a golf course and a museum.

Brickyard 400: Indianapolis in July

The circuit is in Speedway, an enclave within the city of Indianapolis, around ten minutes from downtown. Summer is hot and humid, and thunderstorms occur.
