Indianapolis 500 2027: date, grandstands, history and tickets guide

The Indianapolis 500 2027 is confirmed for Sunday 30 May 2027 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, with the 111th Running at the end of a month of practice, qualifying and tradition. This page covers the dates, the race, the history, the grandstands and how to approach tickets.

Indianapolis 500 2027: date and what is confirmed

The 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday 30 May 2027, and the Speedway has confirmed the month of May window from 18 to 30 May. This is the only round of the 2027 IndyCar season whose date is firm, which sets it apart from the provisional weekends on the IndyCar 2027 schedule. The race is round seven in the current draft, and it sits between the Indianapolis Grand Prix in mid-May and Detroit a week later.

Session times are not published yet. The organiser normally releases them a few weeks before the event, so avoid planning around a specific hour until then. What you can plan now is the broader shape of the trip: how many days you want to spend at the track, where to stay and which seating style suits you.

The Indy 500 race and its traditions

What happens on Indy 500 race day

The race is 500 miles on a 2.5-mile oval, run by a field of 33 cars lined up in 11 rows of three, a format in place since 1912. Before the green flag, the crowd hears the traditional song Back Home Again in Indiana, sung since 1946. After the finish, the winner drinks milk, a custom that dates back to 1933.

Why the Indy 500 matters in motorsport

The race is one third of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, together with the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That reputation attracts fans from many countries, and it explains why the Speedway is often described as the largest sports venue in the world.

Indianapolis 500 history and the 2026 finish

Records at the Indianapolis 500

Four drivers have won the race four times: A. J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., Rick Mears and Helio Castroneves. The venue opened in 1909 and is nicknamed the Brickyard, a nod to the strip of bricks that still marks the start-finish line and is known as the Yard of Bricks. The Speedway is owned by Penske Entertainment.

What the 2026 Indianapolis 500 told us

The 110th Running on 24 May 2026 produced the closest finish in the history of the event. Felix Rosenqvist, driving for Meyer Shank Racing, won by 0.0233 seconds over David Malukas, and the race set a record with 70 lead changes. Alex Palou, who won in 2025, had taken pole at 232.248 mph, and Mick Schumacher was named Rookie of the Year. That finish raised expectations for 2027.

Following the Indy 500 race: drafting, pit stops and strategy

How the Indy 500 is won

Over 200 laps, track position matters less than it seems, because cars running in a line can pass using the tow of the car ahead. Fuel economy, tyre wear and the timing of caution periods all shape the order, so the leader on lap 150 is rarely certain to win. The 70 lead changes in 2026 show how fluid the race can be.

What to watch at the Indianapolis 500

Follow the pit lane exchanges as well as the track, because a slow stop can cost several places. Late restarts often decide the result, so stay in your seat until the chequered flag.

Indianapolis 500 qualifying and the month of May calendar

The Speedway has published the broad structure of the month. Practice is listed for Tuesday to Friday, 18 to 21 May, and Monday 24 May. Qualifying takes place on 22 and 23 May, during the weekend branded as Armed Forces Qualifying Weekend. Carb Day is on Friday 28 May, and Legends Day follows on Saturday 29 May, before the race on Sunday 30 May.

In recent years the qualifying format has set positions 13 to 30 on the Saturday, with a shoot-out for the fastest six drivers and the pole on Sunday, and a last-row battle for the final places on the grid. Treat the format as the recent pattern until the series confirms the 2027 rules. If you can attend only one extra day, many fans choose Carb Day for its final practice and its atmosphere.

Landmarks to see around the Indianapolis 500 grounds

The Speedway is more than a track. Fans often look for the Pagoda, the control tower beside the start-finish line, and Gasoline Alley, the garage area where teams prepare. The Yard of Bricks at the start-finish line is a favourite photo spot, and the IMS Museum tells the story of the venue and of the race. If you arrive on a practice or Legends Day, you may have more time to explore, though access rules can vary by ticket, so check before you travel.

Indianapolis 500 grandstands and viewing areas

Main straight seating at the Indy 500

Named areas on the main straight include the Paddock, on the pit side, and Tower Terrace, which has bench seating with backs. Penthouse and Box seats are upper-level covered areas with seat backs. These areas give a clear view of the start, the pit stops and the finish, which is why they tend to draw the highest demand.

Turn seating and uncovered stands at the Indianapolis 500

Turn 1 Stands are named in the Speedway's ticket materials. Stands G, H and J are uncovered grandstands without seat backs, and the Vista grandstands, at the Southwest and Northwest ends, are also uncovered and have no seat backs. Turn 3 and Turn 4 stands exist, but we have not verified their detail, so check the ticket map before choosing.

General admission at the Indy 500

General Admission mounds are viewing areas in the infield. Children aged 15 and under are free with a paying GA adult. The infield also has a concert area known as the Snake Pit, with tighter rules: no coolers in pit sections and no professional cameras or lawn furniture in certain zones.

Indianapolis 500 2027 tickets: how to approach them

The Speedway's own process favours existing holders: people who had 2026 seats can renew, and new applicants request tickets through an application. General sales were due to begin in the autumn of 2026. Tickets are on sale now through the Tickets button on this page, where you can compare the categories currently listed.

We do not quote prices. They change with the area, the day and the sales period, and the quickest way to see the real range is to open the ticket page. If your priority is a view of the pits and finish, look at main straight areas. If you prefer a lower-cost option with a festival feel, consider a General Admission mound. For a family trip, the free entry for children aged 15 and under with a paying GA adult is worth knowing.

Remember that parking, shuttles and camping are separate from your seat. Our companion Indy 500 2027 guide covers access, the infield, camping and the rules on coolers in more detail.
